Der römische Kaiser Konstantin I. hatte befohlen, dass alle Söhne von Berufssoldaten in der römischen Armee dienen mussten. So wurde 331 n. Christus auch Martin, Sohn eines römischen Offiziers, im Alter von 15 Jahren ein Soldat. Martin war ein bescheidener und gütiger junger Mann. Obwohl er nicht getauft war, lebte und handelte er wie ein Christ.
Seine Kameraden schätzten ihn wegen seiner Geduld und Nächstenliebe.
Sie fanden, er sei eher ein Mönch als ein Krieger, weil er stets nur das Nötigste von seinem Sold für sich behielt und alles andere armen und kranken Menschen gab.
Bereits drei Jahre später war er Gardeoffizier und in Amiens stationiert, als eine Begebenheit, vor den Toren der Stadt, sein Leben für immer verändern sollte:
Es war an einem jener bitterkalten Wintertage dieser Zeit. Viele Menschen waren in der klirrenden und eisigen Kälte schon gestorben. Martin ritt auf seinem weißen Schimmel auf das Stadttor zu, als ihm ein Bettler entgegenwankte. Er war völlig unbekleidet und flehte die vorübereilenden Leute an, ihm doch zu helfen. Doch niemand half. Alle schauten weg. Nur Martin empfand tiefes Mitgefühl und mit einem Mal spürte er, dass Gott seine Wege zu diesem armen Menschen gelenkt haben musste, um Barmherzigkeit zu üben. Doch wie sollte er, der auch nur seine Waffen und einen einfachen Soldatenumhang aus Wolle bei sich trug, helfen? Der Umhang gehörte ihm noch nicht einmal, er war Eigentum des römischen Kaisers. Doch Martin zögerte nicht lange. Er nahm sein Schwert und teilte den Umhang in zwei gleiche Hälften. „Hier, armer Mann, nimm’ meine Mantelhälfte und hülle dich darin ein, mehr habe ich leider nicht, was ich dir geben könnte.“ Dankbar nahm der Bettler das Mantelstück an und schlang es sich um den mageren, ausgekühlten Körper. Martin bekleidete sich mit der anderen Hälfte. Einige Leute waren stehen geblieben und machten sich sogar darüber lustig, dass ein Offizier der römischen Garde nun selbst wie ein abgerissener Bettler aussah. Andere, die viel mehr hätten geben können, waren beschämt.
In der folgenden Nacht hatte Martin einen Traum: Jesus Christus begegnete ihm, umgeben von einer himmlischen Schar Engeln. Jesus trug Martins halben Umhang und sprach:
„Martin, ich war der Bettler, dem du deine Barmherzigkeit geschenkt hast.“ Den Engeln rief Jesus zu: „Hört ihr Engel! Martin, der noch nicht getauft ist, hat mich mit diesem Mantel gerettet!“
Als Martin am nächsten Morgen erwachte, wusste er, dass er sein Leben völlig ändern wollte. Er verließ die Armee und trat als Mönch in den Dienst Gottes. Aber erst einige Jahre später, ließ er sich taufen und wurde 371 sogar Bischof von Tours.
